We purchased the Valley Feed and Supply store in McMinnville in 1977 and operated out of a building on Highway 99W at the north end of McMinnville. In 1979, when McDaniel Grain Company sold their retail and feed business to us, we decided to combine the two and keep the Valley Feed and Supply name albeit operate out of the historic Buchanan Cellers building.
The business has come a long way from the days when Jerry would personally drive the company truck each morning to pick up animal feed in downtown Portland and make it back to McMinnville in time to open up the store for business. The industry we operate in has also changed from having dozens of local dairies that would shop at our retail store to us making on-farm deliveries to a smaller number of much larger dairies. As such, our retail store has evolved from a focus on commercial accounts to a store servicing the needs of pet owners, wild bird enthusiasts, and hobby farmers.
Our son Jay joined the family business in 1996 to serve as the General Manager. Jay graduated from Oregon State University in 1992 and worked for an accounting firm in downtown Portland for 4 years. Jay grew up working at the store after school, on Saturdays and during the summer months. Our daughter Mindy is a professor at Linfield College in McMinnville and our son Andy is a Program Director at Nike in Beaverton.
The distribution side of the business has grown from us using a 4,500 square foot warehouse with one small delivery vehicle to our current 72,000 square foot distribution warehouse on over six acres utilizing eight tractor trailers and one 26′ box truck. Our distribution warehouse also houses our mineral blending operation where we produce a number of products under our Equi-Lux, Nutri-Lux, and Beaver brands. Jerry has been instrumental in developing a wide range of products for livestock and pets that has led to a dramatic increase in sales over the years. We take pride in bringing out new and innovative products on a regular basis.
In 2007, we decided to rebrand our operation from Valley Feed and Supply to the current Buchanan Cellers name. This keeps with the historic feel of the Buchanan Cellers feed mill and ties to the local community. We were even added to the National Register of Historic Places, something we are incredibly proud of.
Today, the five-story downtown shop offers more than 8,000 square feet of retail space and a 4,500 square foot feed warehouse. Customers can meander past historic relics of an old feed mill on a wood plank floor under huge fir beams hewn from logs salvaged from the Tillamook Burn as they shop for feed, pet food, wild bird food, seed, fertilizer, garden supplies and more. Come and see us!
